Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father's death as a Carnival barker when Ruth was just a young girl She was required to provide for the family by working as a cook and server. Ruth was born in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in high school. She left school after two years in order to study acting. Her path was not without obstacles. When she was in New York, her first job involved posing stills in crime magazines. acting work she longed to do was abyssal. She then worked as the hat checker in an evening club, before deciding to call her quits and relocating to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make enough money with her ushering duties in the morning, while working at night in the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She also completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
